An Acute Assessment: BHP Using Telemedicine to Streamline Mental Health Care Delivery in Emergency Departments
One in eight emergency department visits is for the treatment of mental health or a substance use disorder, however, most EDs do not have the behavioral health provider staffing to properly assess and treat these patients. Behavioral Healthcare Providers (BHP), a behavioral health organization in Minnesota, integrated telemedicine into its Diagnostic Evaluation Center program to provide EDs with remote access to mental health clinicians for crisis assessments and interventions.

Read this case study to learn how BHP:
  • Provides better out-patient resources and care coordination while lowering inpatient admissions
  • Completed more than 5,000 virtual mental health crisis assessments annually
  • Drastically decreased the patient median wait time to 30 minutes
  • Reduced inpatient admissions by approximately 33% for mental health patients in the ED
